The men’s singles final of the 2026 World Championships is the ninth seed against the tenth. The women’s singles final is the first seed against the second. Two draws, one tournament, and about as complete a contrast as the sport can produce.

The men’s final nobody previewed

Every preview of this tournament, ours included, started from the same place: Shi Yuqi, world number one, top seed, defending champion. He lost in the first round to an unseeded 21-year-old Indian. That was the beginning rather than the end of it.

What is left is Kodai Naraoka, seeded 10, in his first World Championships final, against Alex Lanier, seeded 9. Naraoka got there by losing the opening game of his semi-final 21-17 and then winning the next two 21-11, 21-10 — a scoreline that gets more emphatic as it goes, which has been the pattern of his week.

Neither man was in anybody’s list of five to watch. Both are now ninety minutes from a world title.

The women’s final that went exactly to script

While the men’s draw was falling apart, the women’s did the opposite. An Se-young, the top seed and Olympic champion, came through her semi-final 24-22, 21-16 against Wang Zhiyi — the player who had knocked out PV Sindhu. Akane Yamaguchi, the second seed and defending champion, beat Pornpawee Chochuwong 21-12, 21-17.

So the final is 1 versus 2. Yamaguchi is chasing a fourth world title, which would move her clear of almost everyone in the sport’s history. An Se-young, who arrived carrying a foot injury and has not won this title since 2023, is chasing her second.

The doubles

The men’s doubles final lost both its most obvious contenders — defending champions Kim Won-ho and Seo Seung-jae, and the second seeds Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Shohibul Fikri who had beaten them twice this season. What is left is Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik against Liang Weikeng and Wang Chang: seeds 4 and 3, and between them a good deal of major-final experience.

Women’s doubles is the cleanest final of the five — Liu Shengshu and Tan Ning, the top seeds and defending champions who won three Super 1000 titles this season, against Baek Ha-na and Lee So-hee. Mixed doubles pairs the world number ones Feng Yanzhe and Huang Dongping with France’s Thom Gicquel and Delphine Delrue, in a draw that lost its defending champions before it began.

India’s tournament

India finishes with a bronze. Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand, unseeded, beat the 16th, 7th and 4th seeds in successive rounds before losing their semi-final to the top seeds — the pair now contesting the final. It is India’s first women’s doubles medal at a World Championships since 2011, and it keeps intact a run of medals at every edition since then.

Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty went out in the quarter-finals. PV Sindhu, Ayush Shetty and Lakshya Sen are all long gone. For a home tournament that began with an Indian beating the world number one, the medal came from the one place almost nobody was looking.
