India’s Home World Championships Just Lost Both Its Biggest Names

India’s two best singles hopes went out of their home World Championships within about an hour of each other. PV Sindhu lost 21-11, 15-21, 21-17 to third seed Wang Zhiyi after 88 minutes. Ayush Shetty, three days after beating the world number one, lost 21-19, 21-11 to Alwi Farhan.

Delhi has been an excellent tournament for Indian badminton right up until Thursday evening, when it stopped being one.

Sindhu: 88 minutes, and a medal streak ends

This was the match Sindhu needed to win to keep alive a pursuit of a record sixth World Championships medal. She lost the first game 21-11 and looked to be heading out quickly. Then she took the second 21-15 and turned it into the kind of contest she has won for a decade.
